Madeleine book on sale in Portugal

Madeleine book on sale in PortugalA book by the policeman who initially headed the investigation into the disappearance into Madeleine McCann is being published in Portugal today.

In the book former police chief Goncalo Amaral claims Madeleine is dead and was killed in the holiday apartment the McCanns were renting in Praia da Luz.

He criticises the family, their friends, prime minister Gordon Brown and the British police in the 224-page book entitled In Maddie – The Truth of the Lie.

Mr Amaral was in charge of the police investigation when Gerry and Kate McCann were named as official suspects but was later removed after speaking out against British officers.

In his book he questions why the McCanns needed a public spokesperson and accuses them of neglecting their children.

Their friends are also accused of giving conflicting statements to the police, while Mr Brown is criticised for trying to influence the investigation.

The official investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine was shelved on Monday and the McCanns and Robert Murat had their 'arguido' status lifted.
